Two activities enable personal and social skills to be developed, such as presentation, communication, time management, team work, organisation, research and problem solving. In addition to testing understanding it also provides an opportunity for pupils to make connections between subjects.
The notion of cross-curricular studies can be perceived as an idealistic aim, often because the resources to support such a project are unavailable.
This first exercise is a multi-disciplinary activity intended essentially to aid the transition from primary to secondary, by facilitating an introduction to subsequently more narrowly based subject teaching.

An alternative purpose for cross-curricular activity is to provide a vehicle for pulling together subject work and giving the opportunity for pupils to apply knowledge acquired in, for example, science, geography and design and technology, in a real context.
