Teacher Notes - Oakcombe Farm

The object of this exercise is to help children to connect the functions of the farm and the breeding of animals with the production of food sold in our shops.Much of the information is available in the notes provided but some details will require investigation by pupils in their local community. If you wish to provide more detailed and up to date figures on the market prices for produce, or indeed discuss the reasons for these differences, there are newspapers and magazines such as 'The Farmers Guardian' or the 'Farmers Weekly', available on a weekly basis. These would give prices in markets right across the country.

There is obviously a difference in the price of different cuts of meat, it is suggested that an average price is taken. There is a seasonal and geographical difference in the price livestock sells for across the country. The prices quoted are an average taken at one point in time.

In researching prices it may be worth looking at both local shops and at least one of the larger food superstores. The reasons for the differences in prices would make a good issue for discussion.

The presence of tourists in the village is mentioned. This provides an opportunity for marketing the produce of other farmers and businesses in the village and for including some country crafts, such as making corn dollies and basket weaving. Refreshments could be on offer to cyclists and hikers.

Litter is a potential problem and the children could debate the advantages and disadvantages of this when discussing the planning issue.

To advertise the shop, the children could consider the sort of meeting places that there might be within the village, where notices or posters might be put up.On the cassette provided there are a number of references made to the community and village life. Relevant issues such as the local shop and public transport are also mentioned.

Enquires can be made with local newspapers/corner shops as to the cost of advertising.
