Teacher Notes - The Lychford File

The teachers' section contains teachers' notes for each unit in the student work sheets.  These teacher notes and student work sheets can all be downloaded in either word or pdf format. The teacher notes can also be viewed on the website. It also includes suggestions for creative activities - additional resources of stimuli material for artwork, poetry and music.  There are also suggestions for using the Lychford File to promote: literacy, numeracy, personal, social and health education and citizenship.  Rules for the Woodland and Wildlife Game completes the teachers' section.

The Lychford File does not attempt to give a totally comprehensive view of the British countryside.  Instead, it focuses on a number of topics of common interest which illustrate different aspects of the rural economy and environment and which are well demonstrated by the particular area on which the pack is based.  The file can provide a total topic approach for a whole term or taken individually, the units give scope for work concerned with science, technology, mathematics, geography, history, English, art and music.  They can be used for individual and group work for writing, illustration or discussion.

Worksheets in the students'section include:

Introduction to Lychford
(Work sheets 1-5)

Provides a foundation for the following units and an opportunity for covering much of the geography programme of study for key stage 2.  Comparisons are encouraged between Lychford and students' own areas.  It is well resourced with maps, overlays, aerial photographs and statistics.

Torre Farm (Work sheets 6-8)

Focuses on sheep farming.  It is particularly concerned with the identification of sheep through different forms of marking and the use of drawing as a means of recording and communicating (National Curriculum art and design and technology)

Nurcot Farm (work sheet 9)

Is concerned with producing hay and silage for animal winter feed.  It provides opportunities for simple scientific experiments concerned with food presentation (science, technology).

Upcot Farm (work sheet 10)

Arranging a Standing Order with your bank enables you to give a regular gift to our general fund. Regular giving enables us to plan our future commitments and helps reduce administrative costs.

Lychford Park (Work sheets 11-20)

Is concerned with the activities of a country estate where the keeping of game and fish make an important commercial contribution.  This provides the context for practical artwork and technology activities.

Oakcombe Farm (Work sheets 21-23)

Has a farm shop and provides the background for a detailed project involving bank loans, business plans, market 'niches', wholesaling and retailing, issues around small local shops, including health and safety, etc.

The Lychford Times (work sheet 24)

Considers the implications of severe weather conditions for village and farm life and provides the starting point for writing a newspaper article, or developing a village newspaper.

The Punchbowl (work sheets 25-27)

Is a local beauty spot and this unit looks at the environmental issues around tourism and provides an opportunity for mathematical, technological and electronic activities.

Other resources in the student section include:

Woodland Wildlife Game

A series of sheets - Animal Factfile, Home, Features, Footprints, Prey and Food which can be used to play a variety of games.  Two alternative sets of rules are provided and students may also construct their own game.  In using the sheets they will gain valuable insights into biological aspects of science.

Photographs

Photographs illustrating aspects in the different units, provided for teachers to use with classes or small groups.  They can be used to stimulate discussion, written or art based work.

Video Tapes

To cover production costs there is a charge for these items, they can be ordered online)

"The Lychford Year" provides a record of activity through the course of a year in the Lychford area.  It provides valuable visual support for all the units as well as being a complete story in itself.  A transcript is provided to assist the teacher in showing short clips to illustrate particular units.

Audio Tapes
